1 dead, 1 injured after boat capsizes in Lake Pontchartrain near Twin Span Bridge
ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (WVUE) - One man is dead and another was taken to the hospital after their boat capsized in Lake Pontchartrain near the Twin Span Bridge, officials say.
The search for the vessel began just after 5 a.m. on Thurs., Sept. 22.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says Ricky Hodgson, 62, and another passenger were trawling for shrimp overnight when their boat was hit by an unknown object.
Officials say the two tried to get their boat unstuck when it started taking on water.
“A lot of people go out at night, it’s a popular thing. It is a dangerous thing,” Point Marine employee Andrew Asproditis says. “Having lights on your boat is important.”
Neither of the two were wearing life vests.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is working to determine what caused the boat to sink.
